Dear ,

It’s been a complicated month here in Israel. Just as we were gearing up to celebrate the Hebrew University’s Centennial - a milestone a hundred years in the making - the regional situation once again took a turn, and our long-planned events were put on hold.

But as always, life on campus keeps moving. Classes continue, research pushes forward, and our community stays focused on what matters: supporting students, making discoveries, and staying connected - even during uncertain times. We were pleased to see that work recognized recently, with Hebrew University climbing to 65th place in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

In this issue, you’ll meet our inspiring alumna of the month, Scarlett De Jean, get a peek into President Milei of Argentina’s memorable visit to campus, see how we’re keeping our international students engaged - even in the most unusual circumstances - and get to know Hebrew University's incoming president, Prof. Tamir Sheafer, as he prepares to lead us into our next chapter.

And if you or someone you know is still considering joining us, there's still time (just barely!) to apply for the upcoming 2025–2026 academic year. We’re also hosting one final Digital Open Day for our international degree programs - don’t miss your chance to explore what Hebrew University has to offer.

Warm wishes,

Alum of the Month: Scarlett De Jean
When Scarlett De Jean thinks back to her time at the Hebrew University, it’s the people that stand out most - classmates from around the world, conversations that sparked new ideas, and the feeling of being part of something meaningful. Since graduating with her MA in Conflict Research, Management and Resolution, Scarlett has built a career in entrepreneurship and consulting, and now works as a Project Manager at the U.S.-based tech company BlackLine. She's also deeply committed to creating opportunities for others, working with Israel-focused nonprofits to bring future non-Jewish leaders to experience Israel for themselves. Her advice to fellow alumni? “Connect with as many people as you can and explore as much of Hebrew University as possible" - these those connections and experiences often lead to meaningful opportunities.”

President Milei Visits HUJI

On June 12th, the University had the honor of hosting H.E. Javier Milei, President of Argentina, for a special lecture at the Mount Scopus campus. In his lecture, titled “Postcards from the Argentine Economic Miracle,” President Milei shared his vision for Argentina’s transformation, emphasizing human capital as part of a national strategy to reduce poverty and promote development. His visit - held during the Hebrew University’s centennial year and at a pivotal moment for Israel - also reflected the growing ties between Argentina and Israel. As a gesture of respect, and in recognition of his personal connection to Jewish tradition, the University presented him with the Jerusalem Crown edition of the Hebrew Bible, based on the Aleppo Codex.
Connection & Community
Amid the recent conflict with Iran, the University continued to host meaningful activities for our international students in protected spaces near the Student Village, from Shabbat dinners to movie nights. Many students participated, choosing connection and community during uncertain times.
“We are committed to the well-being and safety of international students, especially in difficult times,” said Gal Lombrozo, Director of HUJI's Office of Student Life. “Our goal is to provide a home away from home - offering delicious meals, fun and enriching events, and spaces that nurture connection, a sense of community, and belonging. We want our students to feel cared for and supported, and to walk away with meaningful and positive memories, no matter the circumstances.”

Welcoming Our Next President
We’re pleased to announce that Prof. Tamir Sheafer has been elected as the next President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, beginning his term in October 2025. A leading scholar in political communication and currently serving as Rector, Prof. Sheafer has played a central role in guiding the University through a challenging period - strengthening student support and fostering unity across our diverse campus in the aftermath of October 7.

He will succeed Prof. Asher Cohen, whose eight years of leadership have been marked by growth, innovation, and resilience. From establishing new research centers and academic programs to advancing national advocacy, Prof. Cohen leaves a lasting legacy we’re deeply grateful for.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Prof. Cohen - and warm congratulations to Prof. Sheafer as he prepares to lead Hebrew University into its next chapter.
