This morning, Im Tirtzu activists were shocked to discover that a billboard hung on the Ayalon Highway over the weekend, in front of the LaGuardia interchange heading south, had been vandalized by anti-reform rioters. This is was a organized vandalism operation, which included the use of ladders, painting and required several people to perform.
The original sign reads: ''Did you know? In the U.S., Canada, France, and Germany, representatives of the people elect the judges. Passing the reform, saving democracy''
"Today we saw the true face of the anti-judicial reform protests," said Matan Peleg, CEO of Im Tirtzu. "While they are intent on showing the world their foreign financed virtuosity by screaming that democracy in Israel is in danger and must be saved, in the real face of democratic exercise, these protesters acted like thugs, vandalizing banners that support judicial reform."
"The whole idea of a democracy includes tolerating other points of view. The protesters make clear that their true appetite for democratic free exchange is: none. The public, both in Israel and abroad, has just gotten a powerful reality check about the value of free speech and the toleration of other points of view."
"We call on the Israel Police, who have treated the protesters with kid gloves, to wake up to the reality of what these protesters are capable of, and what they really want. At the end of the day, actions speak louder than chants. The protesters have shown that the only democracy they are interested in is the one that measures up to their demands. Otherwise, they are willing to use brown shirt tactics to stifle other points of view. Shame on them! Israel deserves better."
