Prof. Anat Herskovits - Member of the European Academy of Microbiology

The EAM was founded in 2009 and among it are about 150 microbiologists. Its main aim is to promote and enhance the influence of the microbiological science in Europe and all over the world. The EAM is supported by the umbrella organization “The Federation of European Microbiological Societies” (FEMS), and in accordance, these two bodies are having vast cooperation.

The research of Prof. Anat Herskovits focuses on the interactions between the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes and mammalian cells, especially macrophages. Her group investigates various strategies with which the bacteria can penetrate the mammalian cells, duplicates within them, evades from identification by the innate immune system and manipulates the paths of cellular withstanding.

In the last years, she focuses on understanding the interactions between pathogenic bacteria and viruses in their genome, called phages. For instance, Prof. Herskovits has revealed that these phages cooperate with the bacteria during mammalian infection, helping them survive in the human body.
